Alexis Avlamis

Curriculum Vitae

He was born in 1979 in Athens, Greece. Avlamis holds a BFA (hons)  degree in Painting from Athens School of Fine Arts (2002). In 2004 he was accepted to the master’s program in Furniture Design and Manufacturing at the Rhode Island School of Design, but a year later he deferred his admission due to personal health reasons. Since then he kept evolving his art practice, mainly focusing on combining real and fantastical elements , whose juxtaposition results to a dreamlike imagery. He developed a strong passion for the ancient art practice of encaustic (a.k.a wax-painting) as well as for various waxes as an art form, merging art and science. He conducted a five-year extensive and independent research drawing from sources around the world and the net.

Throughout 2009-2010, he was interviewed for Art21’s blog : Inside the Artist’s Studio;  ERT3 (Greek national radio); Chinese newspaper: Global Times; landed a solo show at Zina Athanassiadou gallery, Thessaloniki and worked as an artist-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center, USA and later on at the Beijing Studio Center, China, respectively.

His artwork  falls under the genre of Neo-Surrealism. Starting from scratch and elaborating on his imagination, memories and experiences, he produces “landscapes of the mind”, inviting the viewer to to see both the parts of the whole as well as the sum of the parts.
Avlamis has exhibited his work in Greece, the United States and China.  His work can be found in major collections in Greece and abroad such as: Beltsios Collection, Emfietzoglou Collection, Kitis collection, Liakounakou collection, Djurhuus collection (Denmark), Vorres collection, BSC collection (China), RISD collection (USA) and many others.
